Flood Ready
Since 2017 the CBBCA has been working to enhance our preparedness and effectiveness should another major flood event occur. The recent distribution of the “Flood Ready” pamphlet is one product of that work. We extend our appreciation to the Canadian Red Cross for funding Flood Ready as part of it’s “long term” flood recovery program and our leadership team for creating it; Angela Bernhardt, Heather Lucente, Kara Shaw, and Ian Glen. Our team, working with the City of Ottawa and the Red Cross, has shared & applied many tactical improvements to our emergency response plan in the event it is required again. Everyone whose basement reaches 60.5m has a role to play in being Flood Ready; many small actions can have a major impact on the overall response.
At April 11th reservoirs throughout the Ottawa River basin remained near their lowest levels in preparation for the big melt over the next two weeks; our stretch is a couple of inches lower than usual. Cold weather this spring has significantly reduced the risk of flooding. Melting & rain along the river are expected to increase after the 13th and bring levels up to within seasonal values by month end.
In the event of a flood emergency West Carleton Disaster Relief – https://www.westcarletonrelief.ca/- will be our portal for updates and status; until then WCDR will remain singularly focused on tornado fundraising and recovery. WCDR is a collaboration of the CBBCA, Corkery CA, Dunrobin CA, Huntley CA, Kinburn CA, and WC Food Access Centre. WCDR works closely with the United Way and its agencies and the Canadian Red Cross and is now a permanent part of West Carleton; working to enhance our communities’ readiness for the next ice storm, flood, wild-fire, or other event.
